The New Place

The new place has its pros and cons, but is mostly an improvement over Wolfson and we're quite happy here. We are in one of two flats within a big Victorian (19th-century) house, just outside of the village of Great Milton.

The house is on a working farm, although we don't know yet what they farm. Our landlord and landlady are named Charles and Heather Peers, and we see them out working on something everyday. Mr. Peers always wears a nice sweater, beige slacks, green wellies and tweed cap. It's fantastic. We have also met one of two Peers sons that live nearby, who was over gathering eggs to sell.

There are chickens out back, which we really enjoy visiting. When we walk up to the fence, they all come running over and clucking with excitement - reminds me so much of the movie Chicken Run. They are very pretty chickens: brown speckled rather than the usual white. We have nice views of trees and fields from all our windows, which is fantastic.

I snapped a few photos with the little camera as we were moving in - better ones will come later.

Entrance to Flats 1 and 2. We are on the second floor and Flat 1 is above us on the third floor. Note the stone cat on the stairs - unfortunately it's the only cat we've seen so far. In the background is their utility kitchen or something, with big jars of what we assume is homemade beer but we're not really sure.

The kitchen, which is not at all huge. That's a combination washer-dryer, a wonderful invention that is prevalent here but doesn't seem to have caught on in the U.S. for some reason. We tried it out and it does only small loads and takes forever to do them (like an hour and a half just for the washing cycle), but at least it's convenient and doesn't require coins. The fridge is on the right and the freezer is on the counter in the corner.

Somehow I forgot to take photos of the bathroom, which is the most interesting part! We have a huge bathroom with separate tub and shower, then a toilet in a weirdly shaped separate room. I will get to that soon, along with some updated photos once we've settled in a little more.
