Luminox

Tonight an event was held in downtown Oxford called Luminox, which is a celebration of "A Thousand Years of Oxfordshire." It seems that Oxfordshire, our county, was founded in 1007 as part of the West Saxon kingdom of Mercia.

But the main thing was - FIRE! They had all the street lights turned off on Broad Street and filled it with a variety of fire sculptures and features. The installations were designed by a French artistic group called Carabosse.

There were hundreds of clay pots filled with wax and lit as giant candles, a giant chandelier of candles raised high overhead by a crane, chimneys with shapes carved into them, and chimneys that puffed big flames. All the workers who lit and tended the candles wore bowler hats.

It was fun stuff and reminded us we're pretty lucky to live a leisurely stroll away from such a historical and happenin' place as Oxford.
