Both David and I have only been to small bits of Switzerland before (he in St Moritz and the Italian parts, me in Lucerne for a day) and are dying to see more of it. And we'll be in the German-speaking part for most of the time, which will be good for language practice!
So here's where we plan to go and when:
Sun Dec 17
Fly from Heathrow to Zurich (BA 714, dep 11:30am, arr 2:15pm)
Evening in Zurich, focused mainly on the huge Christmas market in the train station (train stations are actually nice in Switzerland!). Night at Wellenberg Swiss Q Hotel in Zurich.
Mon Dec 18
Morning and afternoon in Zurich, then 50 min by train to Einsiedeln for outdoor Christmas market and pilgrimage basilica/abbey. Night at Hotel Sonne in Einsiedeln.
Tues Dec 19
Longish scenic train ride across central Switzerland to Mürren, a little village in the mountains with views of the valley. Night at Hotel Eiger in Mürren.
Wed Dec 20
Morning funicular trip up the Schiltorn, a mountain with a revolving restaurant where On Her Majesty's Secret Service was filmed. Train to Bern, where we'll stay 4 nights at the really fun and modern Kursaal Grand Casino Hotel.
Thurs Dec 21-Sat Dec 23
A full day in Bern plus daytrips to Fribourg, maybe Lausanne, maybe Geneva
Sun Dec 24
Train from Bern to Zurich, then flight back to London (BA 715, dep 3:00pm, arr 3:50pm)
We just got back from a trip from Marks to do our Christmas dinner shopping and put most of it in the freezer. We'll have a nice little dinner for two when we get back.
