Winter adventure to Trier

Just wanted to post about our adventure to Trier yesterday. We woke up to snow flurries but decided to go ahead on our planned day trip to Trier. We set off just as it was getting light and drove the most direct route we could find which took us through a wilderness area, higher elevations and a lot more snow. Fortunately, the drive was beautiful and uneventful other then our stop at a small restaurant in the middle of nowhere. It was really fun as we were the only ones there and our waitress spoke absolutely no English. We were able to quickly identify and order a standard German breakfast fare that consisted of bread, various meats, cheese, a fried egg and coffee or juice. It was great!


As we drove on we connected to a stretch of Autobahn that was just what I had always envisioned - uncrowded and extremely smooth with nicely banked corners. I really enjoyed it as it felt like driving on the Daytona superspeedway. We kept it to very safe and sane speeds but had a few cars come by that must have been doing well over 130 mph. Again, it was great!

Once in town we were very happy to find stores and restaurants finally open and Holly was able to buy a nice warm coat for a bargain price. We were then off to see the historic sites, which were quite impressive. We saw the cathedral, its treasury and cloister, the Porta Nigra, the Constantine Basilica, the Rococo Palace, and the city museum. I suspect Holly will complete all of the details about these sites in a later post, but for now I am just going to post a few pics.










Later in the day we finally hit a point where we were completely frigid and couldn't go any further, so naturally we stepped into a restaurant! Once again we managed to find a place where no english was spoken and this time the menu was a bit bewildering. With Holly guiding us with a German phrase book, we set out on ordering. Once the food arrived it was obvious that we had done pretty well. For that matter I thought my particular dish, schnitzel on top of a bed of baked cheesey potatoes, may have been the best thing I have ever eaten. Holly had a potato dish that was loaded with cheese and cream. While it was delicious, it proved to be a little too rich to finish.



From there we headed back towards Cologne. The drive home was slow and miserable as it was snowing heavily for most of the way and there were long sections of packed snow on the highway. We took it slowly and tried to stay out of the way of the occasional maniac.

Today we are going to stay closer to our hotel and will likely go to Dusseldorf to do some shopping. I am looking forward to checking it all out.
