The Boat Race 2006

Yesterday was the 152nd annual Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race. It's a major event and the rowers had trained a ridiculous amount for the last seven months (while also attending classes!). Many of them have also won Olympic medals in rowing.

The race is held in London on about a four-mile stretch of the Thames River, and usually lasts only about 16 minutes! But it took over 18 minutes this year because it was ridiculously windy (here in Oxford, too) and the Thames was really choppy. Given its short duration and the not-so-great weather, we didn't bother watching it live. As Lizzie advised us, we get a much better view on TV, anyway.

We really enjoyed watching it, especially since Oxford won, hurrah!! They were not expected to win, which makes it all the better. Also fun is the fact that almost half of the rowers were Americans or Canadians!
