Weekend at the Beach

We spent the 4th of July weekend at Pacific City with three of David's old friends, two of which have nice wives and cute little kids. We had a great time and the amazingly cool weather (60s) was wonderful after the 90-degree heat back home!

We stayed at a cute little beach cabin owned by David's former boss (who is a friend's current boss), which is right on the Nestucca River. David did some fishing from the backyard every day, but despite seeing big fish jumping, didn't catch anything.

I did some reading and played some Nintendo 64, which was set up in the living room with a giant bean bag chair. I did great at Mariokart, thanks to much practice in my college years.

The rest of the time we hung out at another cabin owned by David's friend's parents, which has a fantastic view overlooking the beach and Cape Kiwanda. On Saturday we climbed over a big sand dune to the beach, where we sat in lawn chairs next to David's truck. The fog was rolling over the dunes and along the sand in a very cool way, which the photos don't do justice.

Those green chairs ($5 at Joe's) are so comfy. They were our first living room furniture when we got back from Europe.

Two of David's friends put on wetsuits and went sea kayaking, which was fun to watch from the comfort of our chairs.

Normally there is a great fireworks show from the deck of the beach cabin, but sadly the view this year was completely nonexistent due to thick fog. So although we could hear the wonderful illegal fireworks going off at the beach and occasionally glimpse a muted flash of light, we couldn't see them at all. But we had a nice little show in the driveway of a Costco pack of fireworks instead.
