Remember, remember

The Fifth of November! It's time again for the slightly odd British holiday that celebrates the thwarting of the plot by Guy Fawkes to blow up Parliament in 1605. Mainly, it's a nice excuse to have fireworks and a big bonfire at the onset of winter.

We spent about 20 minutes celebrating, simply by wandering over to the Wolfson pond for their annual bonfire and fireworks display on Saturday (November 4). It was free and they collected donations for an African charity. It was a nice, very autumn-like experience. It does seem odd to have fireworks in the late fall when we're used to watching them in warm July, but I think this is actually a better time. Daylight savings time has just ended, it's getting cold and dark, so it's a nice time for a "festival of lights." The bonfire was warm and cast an orange glow on the trees and everyone's faces.

There were a lot of people there, and it was fun to see young families with their kids all decked out in fur hats and boots. One boy next to us asked his parents, "Why do we have bonfires and fireworks?" It was fun to listen to them try to explain the holiday. The fireworks were decent if not super-spectacular, but they had a nice backdrop of the full moon.

Sunday night (the actual Fifth of November), there was a much more spectacular fireworks display at the private school not far from us. David was still working on Wilma a bit last night (she's doing well overall), and when he took her out for a brief test drive in the neighborhood, he ran into a traffic jam from all the people arriving to watch it!

We didn't know about the fireworks display in advance, but fortunately had a nice view of them from our living room window. We watched them from David's desk and enjoyed the big booms that sounded very close. The line on the right of the photos is our windowsill, and those are the main buildings of Wolfson at the bottom.
